Welcome to Mr. Yarbrough's 8th grade Social Studies Classes and 8th Grade AVID Elective
Remember, we are Empowered to Achieve, Grow, and Learn, Eagles will S.O.A.R!
Welcome to Mr. Yarbrough's 8th Grade Social Studies and Social Studies AVID Classes! The 8th Grade Social Studies Class and Social Studies AVID Class will cover the United States Through Industrialism. Relevant topics include Early Exploration, the Beginning of the American Colonies, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Revolutionary War, Manifest Destiny, the Civil War, the Reconstruction Era, the Industrial Revolution, Immigration, the Progressive Era, and WWI.
Also this year, I will be teaching 8th Grade AVID Elective Class. By insisting on WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading), my goal is to academically prepare you for the future while providing a vibrant, engaging classroom environment in the process. A week would normally consist of Curriculum Days on Mondays and Wednesday, Tutorial Days on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Fun Fridays on Fridays.
This year, I plan on also advising a Model United Nations Program and it will allow students to become actively engaged with methods of diplomacy, research, speaking skills, parliamentary procedure, written resolutions, and high level vocabulary. In this program, students will mirror a similar process that takes place during United Nations proceedings. Relevant present-day topics will be evaluated and examined to cultivate knowledge and to help formulate positions that represent their "country" given. Topics in the past have included the Crisis in Crimea, Women's Rights in the Middle East, Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, the Syrian Civil War, Humanitarian Crisis in Latin America, etc. By first delving into more generic, simplistic topics, students will learn the "M.U.N." process and then later delve into more challenging concepts.
